A Scenic Rafting Adventure
The day starts out with a rafting trip down a beautiful scenic stretch of the Rangitikei River, downstream from River Valley Lodge. On the way down, immense cliffs cradle the river canyon. With over 30 Grade 2 (easy) rapids, the 13 km scenic section of the Rangitikei River downstream from River Valley Lodge is fun for all ages.
Depending on the weather, and any other participants on the trip, we will either stop on the side of the river for a picnic lunch, or we will provide a picnic lunch at the rafting take out.
Time for Inflatable Kayaks
For those looking for a little more adventure, this is the situation where we put on some inflatable kayaks. These stable, and easily maneouvered boats, are a heap of fun and will get young teens (and adults) smiling from ear to ear as they run some of the easy rapids.
If that doesn’t suit you then we can run the trip as a relaxing and gentle float in a raft instead.
Ride to River Valley
From the rafting take out, it is a 27KM cycle back to River Valley. We recommend allowing 2 hours to explore at your own pace and stop a few times along the way.
As you cycle back you will pass over the Mokai Canyon bridge – the old site of Mokai Gravity Canyon. Mokai Gravity Canyon had an 80-metre bungy jump, a giant swing and one of the biggestflying foxes in the Southern Hemisphere, but closed down in 2016.
The route follows a mix of sealed and unsealed roads, winding along rural back roads, past some working stations and back to River Valley Lodge. There are plenty of spots to stop along the route and take in the beautiful unspoilt views.
What Kind of Bikes Are Available?
We have a range of bike sizes (XS-L) with bike frames, all in a mountain bike style. The Giant Talons are suitable for everyone, while our Liv Tempts are specifically designed for women and have a lower top bar. E-bike use on one of our Giant Talons, or Liv Tempts, is included in this package.
Due to the size of the E-bikes we don’t recommend children younger than 10 participate in this adventure.
How Much Time to Allow, and When to Do It
Total time on the actual river depends on flow, but is generally between 3 and a half to 4 hours. Allow time to enjoy your picnic lunch. Then, the bike ride is 27kms, we suggest allowing 2 hours – no rush! Please allow for a full day, with a meeting time of 9.00am at River Valley Lodge.
This is a seasonal adventure, from 1st October to 30th April.
