As recent guests Toni and Steve recollected;

“This suits anyone who likes a wilderness experience. Fun rapids, scenic and not as tiring as other trips. The days aren’t too long, food is excellent, the quality of accommodation is exceptional. We’ll definitely be back.”

“Cheeky glasses of red wine while sitting on sun warmed stones next to a blazing campfire…Meeting new people and getting to know ‘ old mates’ better.”

Hi Brian

Thanks for prompting me to share my thoughts about the Fantail Canyon trip I did.

The biggest obstacle for me going on a Fantail Canyon trip was getting the time off work! As I am the Lodge Chef I had to juggle the rosters a little. In saying that, now I have done the trip I realise that I am totally in the wrong job and should be a raft guide on overnight trips!

It is hard to know where to start describing the experience I had…. Everything from this trip was incredible.

Giant towering cliffs, The gentle sound of the river, Fantails and Swallows following us down stream, Brian’s amazing lamb, Cheeky glasses of red wine while sitting on sun warmed stones next to a blazing campfire…Meeting new people and getting to know ‘ old mates’ better.

But what made the trip for me was the long silences while drifting down the river with my feet dangling in the water and sitting by the fire with nothing but stars and gentle conversation.

But it wasn’t just those things.

I totally rediscovered my sense of adventure and my love of camping!

Also I left the trip with a sense of calmness that only comes from a great adventure with beautiful sights, amazing people and a campfire.

I would definitely recommend everything River Valley does, But this trip in particular is something I think everyone should do. I thought that before we left that it would just be a beautiful trip. Having done the grade 5 section I thought there wouldn’t much adventure to it……..I was totally wrong though.

Walks to hidden waterfalls, falling over in the river, crashing the raft into giant cliffs….chairs catching on fire….It was the perfect camping/rafting/adventure.

The only thing I would like to add is one night camping was not enough. This trip should definitely be a two night minimum – maybe a Mokai Canyon trip for me next time!
