On your bucket list of things to do while on holiday in New Zealand, there very well may be horse trekking

Your imagination is filled with images of wide open spaces, great scenery, and you atop a magnificent steed…….. Well okay, maybe over doing it a bit, but all the same horse trekking is on that list.

Where to do it?

You are only looking for a couple of hour ride as you are not sure how your bum will hold up, and you are not really sure that you will even like it,and it is after all quite high up sitting on a horse, and you are a bit concerned about falling off, and well horse trekking is the same every where you go isn’t it? Not to mention the money it costs!

What to do?

The solution of course (at least from our point of view), is just get on with it, try something new, book the trek, get the kit on and have a great time on a River Valley Stables Two Hour Horse Trek.

Not so simple?

Okay, so lets look at the Problems

Your bum – this may indeed hurt at the end of a two hour trek if you have done little or no riding. However we will endeavour to fit you to a saddle that best suits you. All saddles were not created equal!

Will you like horse riding? – again we can’t guarantee that, however over 90% of people who do a two hour trek with us, rate it as either a 4 or a 5 out of 5. So chances are you will have a great time.

Will you fall off – possibly but unlikely. We will not get you doing things on the horse that you are not comfortable with. As your confidence increases you will have an opportunity to understand what it feels like to be in control of your horse on the ride.

Fantastic Scenery? – to die for!

The MONEY – River Valley Stables two hour treks are extremely good value with quality horses and riding equipment.

What more can we say?

Two hour treks depart daily at 1.30pm, weather permitting.

Two hour treks are most suitable for people with limited riding experience. If you have more riding experience, you could be better looking at a Half Day or Full Day Trek.

Testimonials & Reviews

“We visited River Valley for a two hour trek which was a fantastic experience. As someone who hadn’t ridden for over 20 years, I arrived feeling rather nervous but our guides Autumn and Whiz were friendly and helpful and immediately made me feel relaxed. The scenery of the area is incredible and the horses are well cared for and are ridden bit-free so that they are engaged and ready to go the whole time. A brilliant location and an experience I will be aiming to repeat soon. Thank you!”

“Had a wonderful two hour trek at River Valley. Lizzy our guide/host for the trek was just brilliant. River Valley use natural horsemanship. This meant forgetting all the English riding I have done for the day. Reason being was that we were riding horses with no bit or bridle. Just a rope halter and rope rein. It’s about working with the horse. So after Lizzy introduced us to our steeds, explained how to make our requests via the loose rein we were off. It was a very enjoyable ride across varied terrain. Remember to take a camera as there are several places to stop the horses for some lovely scenic shots with you onboard.  Happy well cared for horses, beautifully kept stables and gear.”

“First time back on a horse since falling off one 22 years ago. Our guide was very particular about the way we controlled our trusty steeds. It was great to learn how to get a kinda mind connection with our horses and I felt very confident about turning and stopping and also a bit of cantering. The horses were very well behaved and I didn’t feel nervous or frustrated with them once. I think the trainer has a really good training ethos. Honey is a gorgeous horse, as was Rico (my wife’s horse). The scenery we trotted round for two hours was superb and a few lovely deer sightings thrown in too. Safe to say id gladly get back on the horse, so to speak. Awesome.”
