A Natural Horsemanship Experience Like No Other
Harmony With Horses is a half day horse riding adventure; combining a challenge packed natural horsemanship session, followed by a freestyle ride over the spectacular Rangitikei hill country which is suitable for all abilities.
We start with building a trusting relationship between you and your horse. It does not matter if you are new to horses or they have been a part of your life forever. We work with you at the level you need to be working at.
Next we take you and your horse, who is now your partner, out into the beautiful country side of River Valley. Here you will have the opportunity to try everything you learnt beforehand. You will be riding over the hills, taking in the spectacular scenery, and if you are up for it, cantering through the fields.
*Please note, between 1st October and 5th November 2020 we are restricted on where we can ride, due to a later lambing season than normal on the farm we ride through. Therefore we will also be including some time at our horse arena, where we have set up some fun obstacles and challenges for the horses. This will still be a half day of riding but will include natural horsemanship, a ride from the stables to the arena (and back) and also some challenges in the arena.
What is Natural Horsemanship?
Natural Horsemanship is about the partnership between horse and human. At River Valley Stables our guides have spent time building this connection with the horses and working with them in a way that makes our horses feel good about their work. It is this connection between you and your horse that makes River Valley Stables unique.
What is freestyle riding?
Freestyle is a style of riding. It is not English or Western, but does have some similarities to both these disciplines. Riding Freestyle is riding in a halter, so no metal bits in the horse’s mouth. It encourages you to build a connection with your horse. It feels fun and free when you have that connection together.

Testimonials & Reviews
“I was just staying at River Valley Lodge and I just wanted to let you know what a magical time I had. I was staying on the ‘2-Day Trekker deal’ and it was very worthwhile. It was hard not to feel welcome there, everyone was friendly and it felt like being at home with a big family. Imagine you will, a trip entailing a trail ride ambling through stunning countryside, a quartet of horse treks across gentle and challenging terrain, and a beautiful lodge cocooned in a valley, alongside a raging river, where you feel like you’ve just dropped off the edge of the planet into another world. A magical kingdom in the middle of nowhere that encompasses your every being, a place that leaves you feeling in awe of the breathtaking scenery, relaxed from the serene and peaceful ambience and, a few sore muscles from hours of horse riding!! So thank you River Valley Stables for making my time there an unforgettable experience.”
“I absolutely adored my ride. Liz takes what she does seriously and has pride in what she does, as do the other staff at the lodge and stables. The best ride I’ve ever done, high country, natural and including the theory before the ride that taught me so much, the whole experience was perfect.”
“We stayed 3 nights, we did the Harmony with Horses half day ride. It was an absolutely amazing experience, getting to know the horse and then ride out, up hill and down dale, and despite it all I wasn’t too sore the next day. I would go back in a heart-beat, and very certainly intend to.”
