A full day horsemanship experience. Combining a challenge packed natural horsemanship session with the opportunity to put into practice what you’ve learned as you explore the foothills of Pukeokahu.
We start with building a trusting relationship between you and your horse. It does not matter if you are new to horses or they have been a part of your life forever. We work with you at the level you need to be working at.
Next we take you and your horse, who is now your partner, out into the beautiful country side of River Valley. Here you will have the opportunity to try everything you learn’t beforehand. You will be riding over the hills, taking in the spectacular scenery, and if you are up for it, cantering through the fields.
Lunch is provided, either at River Valley Lodge or a picnic lunch.
What is Natural Horsemanship?
Natural Horsemanship is about the partnership between horse and human. At River Valley Stables our guides have spent time building this connection with the horses and working with them in a way that makes our horses feel good about their work. It is this connection between you and your horse that makes River Valley Stables unique.
What is freestyle riding?
Freestyle is a style of riding. It is not English or Western, but does have some similarities to both these disciplines. Riding Freestyle is riding in a halter, so no metal bits in the horse’s mouth. It encourages you to build a connection with your horse. It feels fun and free when you have that connection together.

Testimonials & Reviews
“We had a great ride with the lovely Lizzie, in some spectacular New Zealand scenery. Lizzie trains her horses using natural horsemanship, which was really interesting to try and learn about. It took us a while to get used to, but it was very cool and inspirational. We had chosen River valley especially as they promised a more free ride for experienced riders, rather than the normal ride-in-a-line approach you find other places. This was great, but the new style of riding made us a bit like novices again, so we did take it slow until we got more used to it.”
“We had fantastic 2.5 days of natural horsemanship at the River Valley stables. We had the chance to start with a bit of groundwork around the stable to get used to the new style. After we felt comfortable on the ground we got on our horses and practiced in a large paddock. Gaining some confidence we rode to the arena, which was a lovely 40minutes trek down the hills. The horses got a break there and we headed out for lunch, which was very good. In the afternoon, we learned how to exercise a horse in the round pen, mainly with body language. Finally, as one of the highlights, Thomas introduced us to one of the rarley handled Kaimanawas, which was just fascinating- what a beautiful horse Awa is! We definetely would recommend this experience to everyone who loves horses!”
