How Not to Enquire About a Position at River Valley
So you want a job with River Valley?
With this in mind you send us an email enquiring about vacancies. Nothing wrong in this.
The First Type of Enquiry
However the email you send us has no punctuation, no attached CV, and you have not bothered to run a spell checker over it.
And I am not your "bro". In fact you have put zero effort into selling a case to us that we should even bother looking further at your application. There is nothing in that email that says to us - “Please consider me! I really want to join your team and feel that I can make a real contribution.” Why then are so many job enquiries we receive exactly of the type described above?
The Second Type of Enquiry
The second type of job enquiry goes like this. “Dear Sir, I really wish to become part of the adventure tourism industry. I have no skills and no experience, but hope that there may be a training position available with you.” (Nothing wrong with this so far as we do have training positions). The enquiry then takes a dramatic turn for the worse with - “I really love travelling as well, and hope to use the skills I learn with you to travel widely and work in a variety of adventure tourism roles”. For the applicant, this probably sounds really fair. However from our point of view, where is the trade off? Where is the, “Train me and I will do GREAT work for River Valley!”
The Third Type of Enquiry
Ahhh, the pleasure of receiving this type of enquiry.
As soon as you open it you can feel that the person who wrote it has taken time. Time to craft what they want to say, and time to try and express in words what they feel about their chosen profession.
Accompaning that will be a detailed CV.
While this approach still might not get you a position, we will look closely at it.
Often, there is simply not a position available.
Show Me The Passion
For River Valley, I am saying – Tell me about the PASSION you feel and how you can make a real difference to our customers at River Valley. Tell me that the next time you send me a job enquiry. Brian
