Prices Unchanged for World Rugby Tournament
In New Zealand there has been much made in the media of the price increases being touted for many activities, attractions and styles of accommodation during the World Rugby Tournament that is being held here in September and October 2011.
If you are wondering why we are referring to it as the World Rugby Tournament, rather than it's correct name which includes the word "Cup", it is simply that we are not allowed to use it in anything that can be construed as advertising.
What are the Issues with Pricing?
Like tourism operators and accommodation providers the world over, New Zealand businesses have also been hard hit by the Global Financial Crisis. No doubt many business owners see the Tournament as an opportunity to actually make some money.
I really feel that you cannot blame them.
However, the reality is this.
What and Where are the Pricing Issues?
Major price increases are in fact fairly limited.
In fact it would be fair to say, that other than the main centres where there are multiple games, such as Wellington and Auckland, there are few if any price increases.
Where there are price increases, they can be severe - up to 5x normal rate. That is a factor of supply and demand.
What is River Valley Doing?
There will be no Tournament related price increases at River Valley, either for some of the world's best white water rafting, horse trekking, or stays at River Valley Lodge, New Zealand's original Adventure Lodge.
Our Advice
Our advice is simple.
By all means head to the centres where the games are, and soak up the atmosphere, both on and off the pitch.
However, between games, go exploring. Get away from the main Cities. You will be pleasantly surprised at what there is to do, the fair price for doing it, and the warmth of welcome you will experience in heartland New Zealand.
See you during the Cup, and "Go The All Blacks!!!"
