Aorangi Experiences - Guided Hikes (Hikoi)
In New Zealand we call it "tramping". So you would say, I am going tramping for the weekend. If you are from the USA, this statement would certainly raise some eyebrows.
To go tramping would seem to indicate you are some sort of "tramp", and the fact that you could stay overnight at a "Tramping Hut", well the mind just boggles.
Tramping = Hiking
Clearing up the Confusion
Just so we are clear what we are talking about here, we have generally used the term "hiking", or in Maori "hikoi".
Now that we have cleared up any potential confusion, let us invite you on a hikoi (hike, tramp, walk).Hikoi ki Paerau , (A walk into the distance), is a unique joint venture between River Valley and the Maori people of the Aorangi Awarua Trust.
The experiences offered include a number of guided hikes that incorporate client interaction with Maori culture.
Hikes takes place on the mountain, Aorangi, set within a 5000 hectare block of privately, (Maori), owned land.

An Ancestry Going Back through the Mists of Time
The Aorangi Awarua Trust represents the Maori landowners of the mountain, Aorangi. These families can trace their whakapapa, (ancestory), back hundreds of years, to a common ancestor, a Maori explorer known as Tamatea Pokai Whenua, (Tamatea who explored the land).
What is the Key to this Unique Experience?
The key to this unique experience is not only the magnificent views, and native forest, but also the interaction between guides and clients.
This is an experience whereby clients are immersed in both the natural world of New Zealand -Aotearoa, and the culture of Maori.
During the hikes, the guides share the history and traditions of the area, plus explain traditional Maori views about interaction with the natural surroundings.
Hiking Options
Two Hiking options are offered.
A helicopter in/walk out experience,
And a walk in/walk out experience.
Hikoi are day experiences.
Important Note: Tracks on Mt. Aorangi are not like some walking track in your local park. The land is steep and rough. An average level of fitness is the minimum that is required.

Hikoi ki Paerau to the top of mountain has to be the best on the ground walking experience I have had in several years within the industry.
Dear Brian, Nicola and the Team,
I don’t know how to express my thanks and gratitude for your hospitality and attention that you extended to me when I visited the Valley last week.
Your staff and family are always so attentive and considerate.
The climb with the group and Richard onto “ Aorangi Awarua” Trust lands. Hikoi ki Paerau to the top of mountain ' has to be the best on the ground walking experience I have had in several years within the industry. Richards’s historical knowledge and his accurate interpretation of the botanical detail of the area is highly commended.
I look forward to assisting (if possible) and promoting the Hokoi ki Paerau if possible.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to being with you again.
Kind Regards
Ron Russell
